While we were getting things set up and ready, the kids were distracted by a Japanese kid show.
Pa was helping to smash some type of nut for one of the dipping sauces.
First, we watched the professionals do it. Then we all got a turn!
They had small and large hammers for smashing the rice. Little Theo even got a turn. He did great!
I didn't get many pictures of Marie, but Claire and Marie did great also!
After we smash it up, they bring it inside for people to split it into separate little balls and coat it with rice flour.
The kids enjoyed making it more than I thought they would. I love homemade mochi. It is soft and yummy!
Here are some of the different dipping sauces and things to mix with your mochi.
Pa and I got a turn to make some mochi too! First, we went slowly around the edges to start pushing the rice together into one ball.
Then the hammering begins.
One person puts water on the end of the hammer after each hit so it doesn't stick to the rice.
The other person has to flip it over so the same part of the rice doesn't get hit over and over.
It was a lot of fun and very delicious! I want to make some more! We might have to get the supplies so we can make this in the states too.
